Department of Journalism and Mass Communication Celebrates National Press Day
On the occasion of National Press Day, DAV Centenary College organized an extension lecture on the theme "Press, Media Literacy, and Youth." Dr. Pawan Singh, CMT Chairperson at J.C. Bose University, participated as the keynote speaker. Dr. Pawan Singh enlightened the students on topics such as the historical journey of the Indian press, linguistic precision, content writing, journalism ethics, technical proficiency, and concepts like "Before Google, After Google," misinformation, and disinformation.
As part of the National Press Day celebration, a PowerPoint presentation competition was held for BAJMC students. The competition focused on the Indian press during pre- and post-independence eras. Students presented on topics such as the history of the Indian press, James Augustus Hicky, Udant Martand, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, National Herald, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, Amrit Bazar Patrika, and contemporary national newspapers.
The officiating principal, Dr. Archana Bhatia, encouraged students to uphold ideals, moral values, and integrity in both their social and professional lives for nation-building. The head of the Journalism Department and program coordinator, Rachna Kasana, highlighted the importance of technical proficiency in today's world and expressed gratitude to the program's overall coordinator (SFS), Dr. Ruchi Malhotra. Assistant Professor and PRO Virendra Singh discussed the inclusion of media literacy in the current curriculum under the NEP as an effort to help youth develop an understanding of content objectives and feedback mechanisms.
Assistant Professor and organizing secretary of the department, Radhika, skillfully managed the event, while co-organizing secretary Kritika trained students for their presentations. The judging panel included Kamlesh from the History Department and Suman Taneja from the Economics Department. Out of nearly 40 presentations, Kirti Shah and Bobby secured the first position, followed by Rudra and Tarun in second place. First-year student Prashant was awarded for perfect attendance, and second-year student Rudra was recognized for Masters in multiple skills.
Winners and participants were awarded certificates and honored with the opportunity to manage the college’s weekly news bulletin.
